ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:

We are currently looking for a Managing Director to join our Capital Markets Communications team in our New York office. The Managing Director will be expected to develop and execute client engagements related to M&A, IPOs, shareholder activism, among other issue and event-based work, as well as ongoing IR advisory. The individual will work with a team to service and advise clients and will also be a primary client contact for senior level investor relations officers and C-suite executives. The individual will also participate in new business development initiatives including directly pitching engagements as well as networking among potential referral sources. A successful Managing Director will also be confident in an entrepreneurial environment, stay abreast of industry developments, as well as help continually innovate the firm’s offerings.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES:

 

Client Related Responsibilities:

• Create client program goals and design programs to deliver on them.

• Manage critical transactions and equity capital markets communications strategies for client accounts, often serving as the primary client contact working with a senior level investor relations officer or CFO.

• Advise clients on strategic aspects of their investor relations program, which may include bringing in colleagues from the Strategic Communications practice and FTI within certain specialty areas.

• Research, develop and deliver best practice policies and programs.

• Counsel clients on how best to create corporate messages and position themselves to relevant stakeholder groups.

• Counsel clients on "crisis" types of situations, such as shareholder activism, that are more complex and beyond the scope of standard communications programs.

• Act as final "eyes" on client materials, such as press releases and presentations.

• Operate accounts with only quality assurance oversight from a Senior Managing Director.

• Work with colleagues in other Practices to ensure the execution of a cohesive overall communications program.

• Oversee billing and client administration issues including helping manage and be accountable on client account profitability.

• Have a firm understanding of each client’s business and market, as well as its shareholder base and sell-side analyst coverage.

•Deliver to CEO/CFO/IRO detailed feedback from institutional investors and translate the commentary into useful advice that can be implemented in IR programs in a proactive and strategic manner.

 

New Business Development:

• Identify new business opportunities in all areas of the oil and gas sector by staying close to the space and recognizing areas for potential communications needs (financial/operational, IR, crisis, M&A, IPO, etc.

• Leverage prior – and build new – professional networking relationships with corporate management teams, investment bankers and specialized law firms to acquaint them with FTI, which will lead to new business opportunities.

• Work with colleagues to produce business pitch materials, create tailored sales presentations, and attend new business pitches via conference call or in person.

• Attend relevant investor conferences in order to network with potential referral sources or prospective clients.

• Take an active role in new business meetings as part of the preliminary pitch team.

 

For FTI’s Strategic Communications practice:

• Work within Strategic Communications’ Capital Markets Communications Practice network and leverage resources and prior relevant work for new projects that arise.

• Educate peers on client wins, including the steps taken to identify the opportunity and close the business.

• Effectively manage client teams including driving "to do" meetings, strategy sessions and monthly and quarterly measurement and reporting.

• Be a mentor to mid- and junior-level employees.

• Take a leadership role in the Capital Markets Communications Practice in sales, thought leadership, product offerings or mentorship.

• Advance FTI’s Strategic Communications practice standing in the field of Investor Relations, including active involvement in internal knowledge share activities, industry relationship development, and external networking through speaking and industry events.

• Develop a full understanding of all of the Strategic Communications practice and FTI’s service offerings and be proficient enough to discuss them fluently in any sales situation.

• Continually look to convert all investor relations-only clients into more holistic communications clients; eventually contribute at a leadership level to a major multi-dimensional account.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

• BA or BS in Finance from accredited college or university.

• 12+ years of relevant experience in the capital markets: sell side experience preferred; open to buy side, analyst, agency, banking and investor relations experience, etc.

• Superior strategic thinking, writing, and presentation skills required.

 

PREFERRED SKILLS:

• Ability to concisely articulate and competently support a company’s equity story.

• Analytical skills to identify and diagnose key issues, misperceptions and factors impacting a company’s valuation as well as the communications solutions to fix/mitigate them.

• Excellent written and oral presentation skills – both in a large group and smaller meetings.

• Ability to learn new concepts quickly and possess a service-oriented attitude.

• Strong project management, quantitative and qualitative research skills.

• Developed ability to multi-task across client programs, firm initiatives and sales opportunities.

• Ability to recognize, explore and use a broad range of ideas and practices, thinking logically and creatively without influence from personal bias.

• Capacity to adjust behavior to meet client needs and personalities and to establish positive relationships with a wide variety of individuals both internally and externally.

• Ability to direct a project from concept to conclusion and manage all levels of employees, including support staff, peers and senior managers.

• Ability to generate and lead new business development efforts, including direct client pitches and networking with potential referral sources.

• Effectively lead account teams on complex client communications challenges and actively manage, develop, inspire, and motivate staff to excel.

• Strong organizational and time management skills.

• Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail.

• Proficient skills in PowerPoint and excel.
