About The Role
We help our clients navigate strategic, regulatory, financing, transactional and disputes issues while supporting strategic decision making and public policy debates around the world. Delivering incisive interpretation of complex energy and climate economic issues has made us a global leader in this field, recognised in industry forums and international organisations.
We are looking to hire an experienced Director or Senior Director in Paris to support the rapid growth of our energy team.
Our energy team is an elite group of individuals from all over the world who strive to offer rationality through advanced expert analysis to energy decision-making across the globe. We take pride in providing bespoke, innovative and actionable expert economic advice to governments, regulators, energy companies and financiers, on the most complex and cutting-edge economic issues in the energy sector.
The successful candidate will join a team of economists, former industry practitioners and regulators who work on high-stakes, sophisticated economic and strategic issues, along five dimensions of expertise in the energy sector:
Strategy – FTI Consulting advises energy companies and governments on how to position and invest in the decarbonisation of energy systems – Examples:
Advising a Western European infrastructure company on the possible business models and required financial public support, for the production of renewable gas (hydrogen or methane);
Advising an African government on its 10-year gas import strategy, in the context of strong energy demand growth
Advising an Asian energy company on expected renewable hydrogen demand and modelled prices to support its new entry strategy
Regulation – FTI Consulting advises energy ministries, regulators and regulated companies on the design and impact of regulatory regimes applicable to electricity, gas, carbon, fuels and related markets – Examples:
Designing a new, comprehensive, incentive-based regulatory regime for the electricity sector over the next 12 years, in an developing country aiming to further liberalize its electricity sector
Assessing the quantitative impact of several proposed reforms of the EU’s carbon market on carbon emissions, carbon price, electricity price and investments in future power generation
Designing a pathway and regulatory support tools for the decarbonisation of LPG in an EU country
Financing – FTI Consulting advises energy companies and their lenders on the set up or restructuring of their financing for large energy investments – Examples:
Designing new loan terms for a consortium of 11 international banks lenders to an independent power plant in Africa, following regulatory changes
Building innovative financing mechanisms for an electricity transmission operator to support large-scale investments in North Sea offshore transmission lines to connect offshore wind farms, hydrogen islands and neighbouring countries
Transaction – FTI Consulting advises investors and contracting parties on energy asset transactions and long-term energy supply and infrastructure contracts – Examples:
Conducting commercial due diligence on a French smart meter company for a potential international acquirer;
Negotiating a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement for a new 400 MW power plant for the Energy Ministry of an African country
Forecasting supply, demand and clearing prices for LNG carrier vessels over 10+ years to support valuation of a fleet of vessels by an Asian investment fund.
Dispute – FTI Consulting acts as an independent economic expert in complex and high-stakes disputes to advise tribunals on energy markets issues and the quantification of damages – Examples:
Assessing the lost profits of a terminated hydropower plant project in Southern Europe in an investment dispute between a power company and the State;
Assessing the economic implications of the determination of the disputed maritime border between two African countries, focusing on offshore oil and gas production;
Assessing the market value of an energy company following expropriation by the State, to determine reasonable compensation.
What You’ll Do
You will support the delivery of projects and organise the work of junior staff (as well as your own), while managing a growing share of client interaction over time. You will interact regularly with senior professionals who will provide guidance, advice and training to support the development of your expertise in the energy sector, as well as in client interactions and consulting methods.
You will be based at FTI Consulting’s central Paris office with the possibility for sporadic travel. You will join a team of around 400 consultants specializing in energy markets across the world at FTI Consulting.

What You Will Need to Succeed
Ability to conduct research in an effective way, both independently and as part of a team.
Strong analytical and presentation skills with ability to present your work to decision-makers in an effective, convincing manner.

An enthusiasm for solving technical and business challenges in high-pressure environments.

Basic Qualifications and Experience
Quantitative related degree from a university with a reputation for excellence in the subject in question, and a robust quantitative background related to economic analyses
Significant experience in addressing strategic, economic and regulatory issues in the energy sector (electricity, renewables, natural gas, oil).
- Several years’ experience in consulting focusing on the energy sector combined with recognised expertise in several sub-sectors of the energy field (gas, renewables, electricity, etc).
Experience of leading project teams and mentoring less experienced colleagues.
Fluency in written and spoken English is essential.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
Prior background and experience in strategic or economic consulting would be highly preferred.
- Fluency in languages besides English (French, Spanish, Arabic or other) would be highly favourable.
- International experience, either through projects or full-time employment, although not a requirement, would be advantageous.
- Experience in financial analysis or market modelling, although not a requirement, would be advantageous.
