Snr Consultant - Healthcare - Sydney
Are you interested in improving how health services actually operate? Join FTI Consulting’s growing health team and work alongside clients to deliver practical, meaningful change.
About The Role
At FTI Consulting, we are dedicated to transforming the health and human services sector. As a specialised consulting firm, we offer a unique environment that combines the agility of a small firm with the depth of industry expertise you’d expect from larger consultancies.
Our health and human services practice is rapidly growing, and we are seeking a Senior Consultant to join our team. We work with public, private and not-for-profit health organisations, delivering work across healthcare transformation and operations, healthcare strategy and policy, digital health, and healthcare data and analytics.
This role will sit primarily within our health operations work, supporting clients to improve how health services run in practice. You’ll also be part of a broader team and may have opportunities to contribute to related work across other areas of our health practice from time to time, depending on project needs and your interests.
The role is practical and delivery-focused. You’ll work closely with clients, often on site, and alongside clinicians, managers and executives to help turn ideas into meaningful, sustainable change.
What You'll Do
As a Senior Consultant in our health consulting team, you’ll work across a range of engagements supporting public, private and not-for-profit health organisations to improve performance and deliver meaningful change. While the focus of this role is on health operations, your work will span a variety of project types and settings.
Your work will be hands-on and delivery-focused, and may include:
· Working alongside health service leaders, clinicians and operational teams to understand how services are currently operating and where improvement is needed
· Supporting the design and on-the-ground implementation of operational and service improvement initiatives, helping clients tackle their most pressing operational challenges and deliver meaningful, measurable improvements in performance
· Helping translate complex operational and organisational issues into clear priorities, practical actions and solutions that teams can realistically implement
· Preparing clear, concise materials to support decision-making by executives and boards, grounded in an understanding of how services operate in practice
· Facilitating or supporting workshops, working sessions and site-based activities to engage stakeholders and drive progress
· Contributing to the day-to-day delivery of projects, including coordinating tasks, supporting workstreams and helping maintain momentum through implementation
· Contributing to related health consulting engagements (e.g. digital health, strategy or sector reform) where relevant, while maintaining a strong grounding in operational delivery
· Supporting business development and knowledge-building activities, such as proposals, case studies or internal tools, as your experience grows
From day one, you’ll be trusted with real responsibility and supported through coaching, on-the-job learning and exposure to a broad range of health consulting work, with a strong emphasis on practical delivery and implementation. You’ll work closely with experienced leaders, peers and client teams, contributing to work that has a tangible impact on how health services operate and the outcomes they deliver.

Qualifications & Experience
We are looking for strong candidates with approximately 2–4 years of relevant experience, who are motivated to build a career in health operations consulting.
Above all, we are looking for people who are excited by improving how health services actually operate, and who want to combine clear, structured thinking with practical, on-the-ground delivery in complex, real-world environments.
There is no single “perfect” background for this role. Strong candidates may come from different professional pathways and bring different strengths, and we recognise that experience in consulting and experience in healthcare do not always sit neatly together. What matters most is the ability to think clearly about complex problems, work credibly with a wide range of stakeholders, and contribute meaningfully to operational improvement and change.
Strong candidates typically come from one of the following pathways:
Consulting-first candidates:
You have experience in consulting or professional services environment and can demonstrate:
· Strong problem-solving and structured thinking skills, including the ability to frame complex problems and develop clear, logical hypotheses
· Experience delivering high-quality analysis, presentations and written outputs for senior stakeholders, with a focus on clarity, insight and decision-making
· Comfort working in fast-paced, ambiguous environments with evolving client needs, including balancing multiple workstreams and priorities
· A genuine interest in specialising in the health sector and in hands-on, operational and delivery-focused work
Health-first candidates:
You have worked in a health service, operational, improvement or project role and can demonstrate:
· Hands-on involvement in service improvement, operational change or performance initiatives within a complex health environment
· Experience contributing to process improvement, service redesign, implementation or performance improvement work, rather than purely clinical or technical practice
· Strong transferable skills, such as project delivery, stakeholder engagement, workshop facilitation or data-driven analysis
· The ability to step back from day-to-day operations to think analytically, synthesise issues, and communicate insights clearly
· Motivation to apply your experience in a consulting context and work across multiple clients and challenges
Across both pathways, we are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate:
· Exposure to health operations, service improvement or performance initiatives (for example, across service delivery, workforce, access, or operational performance)
· Confidence engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, including clinicians, managers and executives
· Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a delivery-focused environment
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce concise, impactful presentations and reports
· Ability to make sense of qualitative and quantitative information and translate it into clear, practical insights
In addition to technical capability, we place significant weight on mindset and behaviours. We are looking for people who:
· Are eager to learn, open to feedback, and committed to continuous development
· Are curious about how systems work and motivated to improve them
· Value practical change in complex, real-world settings over theoretical or purely analytical solutions
· Are comfortable making progress in ambiguous environments where there are no simple answers and where trade-offs are required
· Demonstrate integrity, resilience and a strong sense of personal accountability
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or equivalent industry experience) is required.
Willingness to travel domestically (where practical and appropriate) and flexibility to work both independently and as part of a team are essential.
